Your Questions About Uk Banks

Steven asks…

Is there a listing of all UK banks addresses which I can use to send standing order forms?

I am membership secretary for a club. Member can pay their membership fee by a standing order which they need to complete and which then I need to send to their bank. That means I get lot’s of order forms that I need to send to different banks and for which it would be useful to have a listing with all UK banks that I can use to send off these forms.

Pip answers:

I don’t know what your forms are like, but any one I have ever used comes with a section that has to be filled in by the person who wants to set up the order to make the payment.

This section has something like ‘Name of your Bank’, ‘Sort Code’, ‘Account Number’ and (get this) “FULL POSTAL ADDRESS”…

Now I realise that some people are just too dumb to fill in their own Banks’ postal address, however it REALLY shouldn’t be too hard for you to point out the need for them to fill in this section before accepting the form back :-)

Richard asks…

Are UK Banks breaking the law by issuing counterfeit money?

The UK is awash with counterfeit money and banks issue it in the course of their daily business, despite the fact that they have the technology to identify it. Does this make them as guilty as the counterfeiters?
I heard a report that counterfeit notes and coins are so widespread in the UK that Banks allow them to go through the system as legal tender so they do not get caught for the loss.

Pip answers:

I’ve never been given counterfeit money from a bank, I doubt that this happens but if your saying it does then they are committing a crime. It doesn’t make them as bad as the counterfeiters though mistakes happen I suppose and its no worse than you trying to use one in the supermarket!

Carol asks…

Can you pay UK cheques into overseas branches of UK banks?

I have a cheque for £5000 UK pounds and I want to pay it into my UK Lloyds bank account.
Problem is I am currently staying for 2 months in the Netherlands.
Is it possible to take it to a Netherlands branch of Lloyds bank, or do I have to post it to a UK branch?

Pip answers:

Lloyds bank in the Netherlands is for corportate banking only, so they won’t be involved in regular customer banking transactions.

You don’t be able to pay in cheques to Dutch customer banks. Therefore your only option is to post them to the UK.

Sandra asks…

Do UK banks invest in the arms trade and weapons?

I have wondered whether money in banks is depostied in arms trade markets within the UK and which banks are known for doing this if they do.

Pip answers:

Oh yes indeed they do, if you want to avoid these go for the Ecology Building Society or Triodos bank

Maria asks…
